Wigtown

Wigtown, which is said to have derived its name from the many lawyers who lived there in times gone by, lies in the heart of Galloway, South West Scotland. In 1997 Wigtown was named Scotlands National Book Town. The Book Town is now well established with over a quarter of a million books for sale, as well as a variety of gift shops, craft shops, art shops, cafes and inns. Visitors can enjoy the new and second hand book shops and attend events at the regular Literary Festivals. Within a few miles of Wigtown visitors can try the many cycle routes, nature and bird trails, outdoor activities including hill and country walks. There are uncrowded, clean and safe beaches, fishing on many of the local rivers including the River Bladnoch and the Cree. Nearby Bladnoch Distillery nestles on the River Bladnoch, and is home of the only lowland malt whisky.

The town offers a variety of shops and a supermarket, a primary school, and doctors surgery. There is a popular bowling green, tennis courts and an excellent 9 hole golf course all within walking distance of the town centre.
